Class of 1959
Gardner High School
Gardner, Massachusetts
50th Reunion Sunday
Our eyes were opened as we experienced the gem that Gardner now has for a public library. Those of us who were seeing the “new” (already five years old) library for the first time were not only impressed with the new space and function considerations of the facility but the absolute beauty of the facility with all the wood paneling and attractive furniture, most of which was donated by local furniture factories.
It’s a good thing that Main Street Catering had the coffee and danish ready as we arrived. Those “late” Saturday evenings take more of a toll than they did a few years ago. The function room that we utilized was just inside the main lower entry to the library and was perfect for our group. We understand it is available to many community groups without charge.
Librarian Gail Landy joined us for Brunch and was a gracious host as she later led us on a tour of this wonderful facility and answered many questions as we proceeded through the different sections of the library. She especially made the point of how this really is a total community facility represented by the thousands who donated even small amounts to the funding, to the wide variety of groups and individuals it serves, to the many local historical collections
.
On behalf of the class of ‘59 a $500 donation was made to the library and the check was presented to Gail Landy. Also presented was signed copies of books authored by classmates Ken Briggs (“Double Crossed-Uncovering the Catholic Church's Betrayal of American Nuns”) and Dave Dawley (“A Nation of Lords”).
In addition to some last chance socializing and singing the “Alma Mater”, several door prizes were drawn. Copies of Mike Richard’s book “Glory to Gardner, 100 years of Gardner Football” were donated by Mike to the class for highlighting the book on the our class web site. Copies were won by Tom Leavitt and Alex Morze. Curt Wickman also won the large 50th anniversary candle donated by Jane (Proud) Pokki.
As the tour ended we said goodbye, many with a warm hug, and with the hope that we see each other again soon. It was a great reunion!
